What Conditions Qualify for Medical Marijuana in Florida?

Learn the qualifying medical conditions for Florida medical marijuana and why a qualified physician must evaluate each patient.

Florida's Listed Qualifying Conditions

Florida law lists several qualifying medical conditions for medical marijuana certification. They include:

  • Cancer.
  • Epilepsy.
  • Glaucoma.
  • Positive status for human immunodeficiency virus.
  • Acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder.
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
  • Crohn's disease.
  • Parkinson's disease.
  • Multiple sclerosis.
  • Terminal conditions diagnosed by another physician.
  • Chronic nonmalignant pain.

Florida law also allows medical conditions of the same kind or class as, or comparable to, the listed conditions.

A Doctor Still Has to Evaluate You

Having a condition on a list does not automatically create a certification. A qualified physician must evaluate the patient, review the medical history, diagnose or confirm a qualifying condition, and determine that medical marijuana would likely outweigh potential health risks.

For an initial certification, Florida requires an in-person physical exam.

Comparable Conditions

The comparable-condition language is one reason patients should talk to a qualified physician instead of self-screening from a web page. The physician decides whether a condition fits Florida's requirements based on the patient's medical situation and records.

Chronic Nonmalignant Pain

Chronic nonmalignant pain can qualify when it is caused by, or originates from, a qualifying medical condition and persists beyond the usual course of that condition.

Patients should bring records that explain the underlying diagnosis, prior treatment, and duration of pain.

What to Bring to the Appointment

  • Diagnosis records.
  • Specialist notes.
  • Imaging or lab reports.
  • Medication history.
  • Surgery or treatment records.
  • Prior medical marijuana records if renewing or transferring.
