Florida Medical Marijuana Card Renewal Checklist

Short Answer

Florida patients need to track the state identification card and the physician certification separately. Renewing the card does not renew the certification, and seeing a physician does not complete the card application.

Beginning July 27, 2026, the OMMU says patients cannot complete an initial or renewal card application unless the registry shows current or scheduled certifications with open orders. Caregivers cannot complete an application unless they are connected to a valid, active patient in the registry.

Start With Two Dates and One Registry Check

Check:

• The expiration date printed on the Medical Marijuana Use Registry identification card.
• The current physician certification and order dates in the registry.
• Whether the registry shows open orders, not only an appointment or payment receipt.

The OMMU identification-card page says a renewal application may be submitted only during the 45 days before the card expires. Do not confuse that state renewal window with the physician's certification schedule.

Before the 45-Day Renewal Window

• Put the card expiration date and physician certification date on your calendar.
• Confirm whether a physician appointment will be needed before or during the card-renewal window.
• Ask whether the appointment is a recertification, clinic transfer, or another type of visit.
• Verify whether telehealth is allowed for your situation after the required initial in-person exam.
• Ask what the clinic fee includes and whether records are needed.
• Confirm your email, phone number, address, and identification documents are current.

Planning early can prevent a gap, but the OMMU says the card renewal itself cannot be submitted before the 45-day window opens.

July 27 Certification-and-Order Check

Before trying to submit the card application on or after July 27, 2026, look for current or scheduled certifications with open orders in the registry.

If those items are missing:

1. Contact the qualified physician or clinic that manages the certification and orders.

2. Ask what is missing and when it should appear in the registry.

3. Recheck the registry rather than relying only on an appointment confirmation or email.

4. Contact the OMMU for card-application questions, not for a physician's certification decision.

Card Renewal Checklist

• Log in to the official Medical Marijuana Use Registry.
• Confirm that you are within the 45-day renewal window.
• Check current or scheduled certifications and open orders.
• Review the card application for the correct name, address, photo, and residency information.
• Add any documents the official application requests.
• Submit the application and payment through the official registry, or follow the OMMU paper instructions.
• Save the application and payment confirmation without sharing private registry information publicly.
• Return to the registry to check the actual application status.

Physician Recertification Checklist

• Verify the physician is currently qualified through the official OMMU search.
• Confirm whether the visit may be telehealth or must be in person.
• Ask what records the physician needs.
• Ask when the new certification and orders should appear in the registry.
• Review route, order, and amount questions with the physician.
• Do not assume the clinic submitted the state card application for you.

Caregiver Renewal Check

Beginning July 27, 2026, the OMMU says a caregiver must be connected to a valid and active patient in the registry to complete an initial or renewal caregiver-card application.

Before paying or mailing documents, confirm the caregiver relationship and the patient's status in the registry. Contact the patient's physician or the OMMU depending on whether the missing item is the patient certification, caregiver connection, or card application.

Common Renewal Problems

The card is current, but the certification expired

The state card does not create an open physician order. Contact the qualified physician before planning a purchase.

The physician visit is complete, but the card is expiring

The physician visit does not submit the state renewal application. Complete the card-renewal step in the registry during the allowed window.

The application cannot be completed after July 27

Check for current or scheduled certifications with open orders. If they are missing, contact the qualified physician. If they appear correct but the application still will not submit, contact the OMMU through its official assistance channel.

The caregiver application is blocked

Check whether the caregiver is connected to a valid, active patient. Do not send patient medical details to a directory or dispensary to troubleshoot a registry relationship.

Before Returning to a Dispensary

After the renewal is approved, recheck the card status, certification, intended route, remaining amount, and dispensary details. An approved card renewal does not guarantee inventory or that every product route is available.
