Florida Medical Marijuana Card Renewal vs Doctor Recertification
Learn the difference between renewing your Florida medical marijuana card and getting a doctor recertification, including why both dates matter.
They Are Not the Same Thing
Florida patients often use "renewal" to describe two different tasks:
- Renewing the state medical marijuana card.
- Getting a new physician certification, often called recertification.
Both matter. If either one expires, you may not be able to purchase medical marijuana from a licensed dispensary.
State Card Renewal
The state card is the identification card tied to your Medical Marijuana Use Registry account. Renewing it keeps your patient card active with the state.
Card renewal usually involves confirming your information, submitting required documents if needed, and paying the state renewal fee.
Doctor Recertification
The physician certification is the doctor's authorization that allows you to receive medical marijuana and marijuana delivery devices from licensed MMTC dispensaries. Patients need ongoing physician evaluations to keep certification active.
Doctor recertification is handled by a qualified physician, not by the dispensary.
Why the Two Dates Matter
Your card can be active while your physician certification is expired. Your physician certification can also be current while your card renewal is still pending. Either situation can interrupt purchases.
Check both:
- Registry card expiration date.
- Physician certification or recommendation expiration date.
Can Recertification Be Online?
Florida first-time certification requires an in-person physical exam. For subsequent evaluations, a qualified physician who already certified the patient after an in-person physical exam may be able to conduct the evaluation through telehealth.
Ask the clinic whether your visit qualifies for telehealth and why.
What to Ask Your Doctor's Office
- When does my current certification expire?
- Do I need an in-person visit or am I eligible for telehealth?
- What is the recertification fee?
- Are route changes or dosage exception requests included?
- What records should I update before the visit?
